The Brinly STS-427LXH is a 42 inch lawn sweeper manufactured by the Brinly-Hardy company. The Brinly-Hardy company has been manufacturing lawn and garden implements since the early 1800s. Brinly has made one of the best lawn sweepers on the market and I happen to own one and I am going to review the product for you. Just to show you how great a lawn sweeper is the following pictures are a before and after and it took less than an hour to get these results.
You can’t see it in the picture but there are still leaves in the two big trees in that picture which is why I didn’t choose a lower setting for one last sweep of the yard. I will still need to get one more pass on the yard when all the leaves come off the trees.
The best part of this lawn sweeper is the amount of time it saves in keeping the yard clean. Not only does it save time, but it is also so easy. Just hook it up and tow it around and it does all the tedious work you used to spend a whole Saturday doing with a rake. The other thing I like is the poly weave material on the hopper. On the bottom of the hopper is an even sturdier plastic. My biggest concern is the hot sun eating away at the hopper material. However, it looks like it will be able to stand up to the elements just fine. One of the other things that I think is great about the Brinly Lawn Sweeper is the ease at which you can get parts. You can get you brinly lawn sweeper parts directly from the manufacturer.
The bad is definitely the rope used to dump the hopper. I have had to tie the rope back together twice. Once was my fault the rope accidently touched the exhaust on my mower. Another time though, it just broke. It is an easy enough fix with a quick square knot. There is another problem with the rope. You have to figure out what to do with the dang thing while you are riding around and sweeping your lawn. It can be challenging to back this into your dump zone for your materials. So you can pull through and drag some of the old materials out with you or plan on making a row of leaves. I think the backing up problem may be a challenge with all the lawn sweepers on the market.
Brinly Lawn Sweeper Specs
|Folded Length||46 ½ Inches|
|Folded Height||45 Inches|
|Hopper Capacity||20 Cubic Feet|
|Brush to Wheel Ratio||5:1|
For the Folded Height and Width I had the sweeper oriented in the manner shown in the pictures below. I have seen other consumers store this with the hitch against the wall but I don’t have room in my garage and can’t fit this in my shed so I store it against my shed in this manner for ease of connection. My only concern with this large storage size is a reduction in the life of the hopper polyweave fabric material. One of my only critiques of this whole system is its large storage size needing almost a 4 square foot area to store this lawn sweeper.
Brinly Tow Behind Lawn Sweeper
I got my Brinly Lawn Sweeper as part of the deal getting my Snapper Lawn Mower. I was skeptical of the utility of the monstrosity of this large and not very appealing looking lawn and garden tool. I really did not believe I would use it enough to make it worth having and seriously considered selling it. Luckily for me, I got my lawn sweeper just as the leaves were starting to fall. So when I got my new riding lawn mower running I decided to give it a test run, and boy was I pleasantly surprised. I have collected some pictures of my sweeper and I just was going to hit the highlights of what may be interesting. Below, you can see a picture of my Brinly sweeper hooked up to my old lawn mower.
If you look at the picture above you can see the white rope coming from the top of the hopper over to the mower. This is the how the hopper is dumped you pull the rope and it flips the hopper up dumping out its contents. It also happens to be my least favorite feature of this sweeper. As you can see there are a couple of knots in the rope. This is where the rope has broken for whatever reason. Also, there is no real convenient to store this rope while you are using the sweeper. The next picture is my way of dealing with the pull rope for the hopper.
The Brinly lawn sweeper has 10 different height setting you can choose for the sweeper brush. To change the height of the brush. You have to loosen a plastic nut and then manipulate the red handle in the following picture. It is kind of strange to adjust the height settings until you get used to it. Also, I typically use a lower setting than what it shows. The setting in the picture is the one I used to pick up the leaves in the pictures at the top of the page.
The last picture is a picture of the brush mechanism
Overall, I would say Brinly has made one of the best tow behind lawn sweepers. With the support provided and the quality that they have manufactured into these units I would choose the lawn sweeper over others on the market.
